The Galkin Undergraduate Research
Fellowships in Brain Science

The Galkin Undergraduate Research Fellowships are funded
by a generous donation from Warren Galkin, ’51.  Each year the
Brown Institute for Brain Science awards fellowships to undergraduate students to support research in a BIBS-affiliated faculty member’s laboratory during the summer.

Undergraduates with a background in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or physics and have identified an interdisciplinary research project with any faculty members in the Brown Institute for Brain Science are invited to apply for funding to support full time research during the summer.  The Brown Institute for Brain Science follows all UTRA guidelines.
 
This fellowship is available for students to work with Brown
University BIBS faculty. Students should first identify an advisor
and discuss the project with them. Application materials include a one page proposal stating the goal of the research, a timeline, and the applicant's research-related plans after the fellowship. A letter of support from the advisor (email acceptable) is also required. A summary of accomplishments must be submitted at the end of the fellowship.

Preference is given to projects leading to an honors thesis and that cannot be funded by other laboratory resources.  Senior undergraduate students who have appropriate sponsors are eligible to apply for the program. However, preference is likely to be given to continuing undergraduate students.  Studies that involve basic and clinical research are also desirable.  Women and minority students are encouraged to apply.
 
It is critical that the project clearly identifies how quantitative/computational/theoretical approaches from the physical sciences or mathematics will be applied to a problem related to brain function (normal or disease related). Simple statistical analyses projects are not appropriate.  
 
Students must have a faculty sponsor; multiple sponsors that cross departments are encouraged. Please fill out the application form and return the application materials to Urmi_Trivedi@brown.edu.
